Why meat is good for us……………
Meat is an important source of protein, essential acids, B vitamins and minerals.
Protein
The protein in meat contains all the essential amino acids in the proportions ideal for human growth, repair and maintenance of bodily functions. Meat proteins are generally well digested and utilised by the human body.
Meat is the most importance source of Vitamin B12 in our diet: essential for healthy blood and nerves. It is only present in foods of animal origin.
Meat I also a good source of B vitamins B1, B2, B6 and niacin, which are necessary for the energy and protein metabolism.
Liver is an excellent source of the fat-soluble vitamins A and D, the latter of which is found in the muscle meats. Kidney also contains s some vitamin A and D.
Vitamin A is necessary for healthy skin and eyes
Vitamin D for Healthy bones.
Minerals
Meat contains a large number of essential minerals: iron, zinc copper, chromium, selenium and cobalt.
Zinc: is important for growth, healthy skin and resistance to disease, and our sense of taste.
The body far more easily absorbs zinc in meat than that found in plants.
Iron: is important for health blood and to prevent anaemia. Especially needed for growing children, adolescents and young women.
Liver and Kidney are especially rich in iron and zinc.
Fat: The amount of fat provided by a meal containing meat depends on the leanness of the meat and the method of cooking. Red meat products only contribute to 22% of fat in the average diet.(1996 National Food Survey) a study found that trimming on the plate alone, can reduce the fat content by as much as 79% (Leeds et al, 1997)
